Campaign Mission 1 - Tyranids vs Space Wolves

Its Dawn of War Deployment with Spacewolves going first. The rules of Dawn of War really put the limit on what Wolf Lord Whittle could put down so he only deploys a Grey Hunter Rhino with his Hero HQ Rune Priest attached.

I on the other hand am able to deploy everything except for the Genestealers which are left in reserve to outflank.

TURN 1
Rhino moves down a little and his priest zaps my Tervigon for a wound.

I start moving units and roll to spawn on the Tervigon… ALL SIXES! The Wolf Lord immediately feels the tables turning on his force as the massive amount of bodies are placed down on the table.

TURN 2
Long Fangs arrive from reserve and will be ready to shoot next round.
The Rune Priest’s psychic test is shut down by Shadow in the Warp.

Genestealers arrive from reserve and I place them on my right moving up to try to catch up the Rhino incase it speeds off.
Swarmlord moves up to try to catch the Rhino from the front while the Tervigon and his 18 strong Termaguant brood move up to close the gap between them and the Long Fangs.

TURN 3
Second and last Rhino with another Rune Priest arrives from reserve and speeds towards the Genestealers.
Hero Rune Priest is able to wound the Tyrant Guard.
Long Fangs finally get to shoot but are mostly ineffective. Unfortunately the Long Fangs never get to shoot again in this game.
The other Rune Priest and his transport kill off 3 Genestealers.

The Termaguant mob makes it to assault the Long Fangs (after shooting them a little) but aren’t able to do much.
Genestealers assault the 2nd Rune Priests Rhino but do nothing.
The Swarmlord assaults and explodes the Hero Rune Priests Rhino.

TURN 4
Rune Priest #2 tank shocks the Genestealers and then shoots them yet 2 remain and pass their leadership test.
Hero Priest’s unit shoots the Swarmlord and only inflicts 1 wound.
Long Fangs stay locked in combat but destroy about four Termaguants.

Genestealers assault and destroy the last Rhino.
Swarmlord assaults Hero Priests unit destroying it down to 3 Grey Hunters + the Hero HQ. In return he looses his Tyrant Guard.

TURN 5
Rune Priest #2’s unit destroys the last Genestealers.
The last Long Fang dies and the Termagants consolidate towards the 2nd Rune Priest.
The Rune Priest Hero inflicts a wound on the Swarmlord (leaving him with 2 left) but now stands alone.

The Swarmlord slays the wolves Hero HQ while the rest of horde moves forward.
The remaining Rune Priest see’s whats going on and exploits the Swarmlords secret weakness: overconfidence. The Priest makes an off comment about how the Swarmlord would never come over there and fight him and that’s what brings about the Swarmlords doom.

TURN 6
Ineffective shooting on both sides.
Rune Priest attempts a psychic power and gets Perils of the Warp.

Swarmlord assaults leaving the Rune Priest and 1 Grey Hunter on the entire board yet in turn fails both of his invulnerable saves.

CONCLUSION
Crushing victory for Hive Fleet Izzy.

THOUGHTS
Don’t get greedy. If you have the game done just leave it at that and don’t take any risks.

HOBBY: Super Paint Removal!

I wanted to talk a little about removing paint on your miniatures. Now, if you're like me you may get to a point when painting your army when you realize that the first mini's you painted are not up to par with the rest of your army OR you buy miniatures from eBay that need to be repainted. So, here's how you can get that paint off. (note: This process works better for metal miniatures than plastic ones)

  1. Get a large plastic container and buy some Super Clean (in the automotive section) of your nearest Wal-Mart or your "counts-as" Wal-Mart.

  2. Fill the container with your miniatures.

  3. Pour in the Super Clean until they're all covered.

  4. Wait for 48-72 hours.

  5. Get a paper plate and put some paper towel on it. This is where your miniatures will lay to dry.

  6. Put on some rubber gloves, the kind a person would use for washing dishes is fine.

  7. Get the container with the miniatures in it and drain the Super Clean. Be careful not to lose arms or any other small parts as the Super Clean dissolves the super glue that was once holding them together.

  8. Now fill up the sink with soapy water enough to submerge your miniatures.

  9. Keep the water running on the faucet but not too hard.

  10. Dump in your miniatures.

  11. Keep them under the water while you scrub off the paint that may still be partially attached. If you don't scrub it under the water there will be half dissolved paint flying around everywhere.

  12. Take the miniature and run it under the faucet until you don't see any more soap or paint bits.

  13. Now put the miniature on the paper plate and it let dry.

  14. Enjoy your nice clean miniature!

Tyranids and Eldar vs Chaos Space Marines and Space Wolves
Hive Overlord Leif and Farseer Mark vs Warmaster John
Seize Ground – 5 Objectives
Spearhead Deployment
Tyrdar deploy first/go first, Chaos Space Wolves fail to seize the initiative.
Tyrdar leave Yrmgarl Genestealers and Doom of Malan'ti in reserve. Chaos Space Wolves have Arjack and 8 Grey Hunters in a drop pod in reserve.

TURN 1
Tyranids and Eldar move up, run.
Tervigon creates some Termagaunts.
The Wave Serpent begins its trek around the outside of the board. It's target? The Long Fangs by the hill/cave.
Rune Priest's Rhino is immobilized by the Wraithlord.
No assaults.

Chaos Space Wolves drop pod comes down near the center of the Tyrdar armies. The occupants target the Wraithguard however their toughness 6, 3+ armor save and the psycic power to re-roll any failed armor save protects them.
Deamon Prince moves into the middle building looking to stomp some Wraithguard. Most of the rest of the army moves very little allowing the Tyrdar force to dictate the battle.
No assaults.

TURN 2
DOOM arrives from reserves however he scatters, I believe, 9 inches from where I wanted him however this ends up working out just fine.
Tervigon creates some Termagants.
Hormaguants move up to assault Arjacs unit.
Termagants move into the outskirts of the building the Daemon Prince is currently occupying.
Wraithguard shoot and wound the Daemon Prince twice.
Doom inflicts casualties on Arjacs unit and the Rune Priest's unit.
Hormagaunts assault Arjacs unit but this does almost nothing a the unit is reduced to 3 models.

Plauge Marines and Khorn Berserker's move down.
Long Fangs attempt to wound Doom twice but he shrugs them off with 3+ invulnerable save power.
The rest of that Long Fang group hits the Wraithguard with frag missiles amounting to 0 wounds.
The Rune Priest and his squad assault Doom and they trade licks.
Arjac's squad finishes off the Hormagaunts and then consolidates away (but not more then 6” from Doom muahahaha).
Daemon Prince suffers another wound via Perils of the Warp and he then flies off and assaults and destroys a Termagants unit. He then consolidates towards the Tervigon.

TURN 3 – ALL HELL BRAKES LOOSEYrmgarl Genestealers arrive from reserve with a clear path to some Long Fangs.
Tervigon creates some Termagants replacing what was destroyed by the Daemon Prince.
Yrmgarl Genestealers move out and assault the Long Fangs reducing the group to 2 models and then because of And They Shall Know No Fear ended up with 1 model. The Genestealers suffered no losses.
Howling Banshees disembark and assault the other Long Fang group completely destroying them.
Wraithguard assault the now lonely Arjac and kill him.
Swarmlord assaults and kills the Daemon Prince.

Chaos disembarks their Plague Marines and Khorn Berserker's. The Berserkers assault the Swarmlord to little effect and the Plague Marnies assault and destroy some Termagants.
The Rune Priest is finally killed and the Doom consolidates into the middle ruin.

TURN 4
Tervigon creates some Termagaunts but actually rolls a double this time so no more :(
Doom moves out of terrain right between the Obliterator and the Bezerkers and during the shooting phase slays the Obliterator and causes some wounds on the Berserkers.
Wraithguard move up and destroy the Plague Marine rhino that was near them.
The Genestealers assault the now disembarked Plague Marines and do some damage.
Swarmlord moves around the last living Rhino and assaults the Plague Marines.
Howling Banshies move down and assault the Plague Marines also.
Doom assaults the last Rhino and destroys it.

With only a Drop Pod (that may have been destroyed I don't' remember), three or four Plague Marines, and an immobilized rhino left, the game is called.
Victory: Xenos

CONCLUSION AND THOUGHTS
-Tryanids and Eldar mixed together makes for a delectable dish of death.
-Play to table. The mission was objective grab but we aim to neuter or utterly demolish the enemy force by Turn 3. If you don't believe your current list allows for such a tactic, revamp and revise.
-BE THE ACTIVE PLAYER. That is to say, don't let the enemy make you react make him react. Know your battleplan before you deploy and deploy with that plan in mind. Farseer Mark knew he needed his Banshees on the far side of the table so he put his transport at the bottom edge of the deployment zone. I knew I'd need Termagants to move ahead and get to an objective to babysit it or I was just going to use them to tarpit whatever enemy got close to them. The idea being when they're through dying Swarmlord can move in and mop up.

-If something is Toughness 5+, fire Krak missiles instead of Frag because as Farseer Mark has foretold, “Krak kills.”

Written Opinion Piece

In the late 80’s and early 90’s there was a war for consumers video game bucks, thought mostly to be occurring between Nintendo’s NES and Sega’s Genesis. There was, however, another contender, the personal computer or PC. PC’s of the time were able to do more than consoles in every facet from education to plain processing power.

One area of technology where PC’s had consoles beat was sound. The most popular sound card of the time was Creative Labs’ Sound Blaster. The card, which featured an 11-voice FM synthesizer, input/output jacks, and a MIDI/joystick port, became the top-selling add-on card in the PC market. (Kent 2001) PC’s also had better looking graphics, given their greater processing power, so the games looked and sounded better then they would on a console. The advent of CD-ROM ensured that PC’s would stay ahead of consoles at least until the next generation came along.

An additional advantage of a PC is education software which was sorely lacking on the consoles. Compton’s Multimedia Encyclopedia, Learning Tree’s Reader Rabbit, and JumpStart’s 1st Grade were all leading examples of software that the consoles didn’t have. Parents wanted to buy something for their children that could help them out with their future not just a game player. My mother for one recognized an important skill to have for the future was typing, so instead of buying me a console she bought an Apple IIc and a typing program. I would still be able to play games on it though so my gaming needs were still placated.

And last but not least, first person shooters available on the personal computer. While first person shooters were not new, there were two notable examples; Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. Wolfenstein 3D was notable because in "Wolfenstein 3D, enemies fell and bled on the floor." (Kent 2001) The game paved the way for what would be the great video game hit of 1993, Doom. Doom was a FPS that added a new way to play games: up to four people could play over a modem. Id software was so proud of this fact they claimed "In 1993, we fully expect to be the number one cause of decreased productivity in businesses around the world."(Wilbur 1993)

For all these reasons, if you could afford it, buying a personal computer was a popular choice over a console.
